A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Ayodele Arise, has commended President Bola Tinubu and members of the National Assembly for the swift passage of the State Police Bill, describing it as a major step towards addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
Arise, who represented Ekiti North Senatorial District between 2007 and 2011, gave the commendation at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.
The Senate on Wednesday joined the House of Representatives in passing the State Police Bill, paving the way for the establishment of state police services nationwide.
The PUNCH reported that if approved by at least 24 State Houses of Assembly, the legislation will end the Federal Government’s exclusive control of policing, allowing states to establish, fund and manage their own police services while operating within national standards set by the National Assembly.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Arise said the proposed state police structure would strengthen local security architecture and improve responses to emerging threats.
He said, “It is a very welcome development. Having state police is a much-needed measure to reduce the security threats we face in the country.
“There is no way security challenges will be eliminated. But kudos to Mr President for being very proactive on this issue as we continue to battle the challenges of insecurity in the country.
“The President has been at the forefront of ensuring that solutions are provided to meet these challenges and eliminate the existence of these bad elements, as well as the ability of the Federal Police to respond quickly.
