Less than six months before  Nigerians return to the polls, President Bola Tinubu and the African Democratic Congress, ADC, are already battling over something bigger than votes. It is a fight to define what the election itself should be about; political strength or the government’s ability to protect lives.

The exchange lasted barely 24 hours, but it may have offered the clearest glimpse yet into the shape of the 2027 presidential contest.

Standing before members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, at the State House, President Bola Tinubu sounded less like a leader reflecting on his record than an incumbent settling into campaign mode.

“I asked for this job. I’m in it. Those who will take it from me will try, I won’t give them a red carpet. We wrestle each other to the finishing point,” he declared.

By the following day, the African Democratic Congress, ADC, had struck back. In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party turned the President’s own language against him with a blunt challenge: “Fight terrorists, not opposition.”

It was more than a rebuttal. It was an attempt to seize control of the political conversation before it hardened. That, perhaps, is the real story. 

A Speech that Doubled as a Campaign Signal

Neither intervention was intended only for its immediate audience. 

Tinubu was addressing Catholic bishops. ADC issued a press statement. Yet both were ultimately speaking to Nigerians already beginning to size up the 2027 race.
