The Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District, Senator Rufai Sani Hanga, has resigned from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), ending weeks of speculation over his future in the party.

Hanga, who serves as the Deputy Minority Whip in the Senate, announced his resignation in a letter dated August 3, 2026, and addressed to the Nasarawa Local Government Chairman of the NDC.

In the letter, the lawmaker said he was leaving the party to enable him to concentrate on his personal activities, which he said had been adversely affected by his political engagements.

He did not disclose the political party he intends to join.

His resignation follows weeks of speculation that he was considering leaving the NDC over what political observers described as dissatisfaction with developments within the party, including alleged betrayal of his loyalty to the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

There have also been reports that senior members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, separately held meetings with Hanga in an effort to persuade him to join the ruling party.

The senator had also attracted public attention after meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Following the meeting, he reportedly stated during a radio programme that while he believed Tinubu would win the presidential election, the President’s party would not succeed in Kano State.

Hanga’s resignation is expected to further reshape the political landscape in Kano ahead of the 2027 general elections, as attention shifts to his next political destination.
