KCB Bank Kenya, Carrefour Kenya, and Mastercard recently launched the Carrefour Prepaid Card. This innovative product is designed to help shoppers load money before entering a supermarket, while providing budgeting tools, rewards, and the ability to top up their balance remotely.
At first glance, it may seem like another payment and loyalty card offered by a retailer. However, it signifies a broader transformation in Kenyan retail. Supermarkets are increasingly providing more than just goods; they are now becoming distributors of financial services.
The Carrefour Prepaid Card allows customers to preload funds for grocery shopping, set household budgets, track their spending, and earn discounts, cashback, and rewards from Carrefour. Its most unique feature is the ability for anyone with a bank card anywhere in the world to reload it. This means that Kenyans living abroad can pay directly for groceries for their family members back home instead of simply sending cash.
This feature is particularly relevant given the significant role that remittances play in Kenya’s economy. Rather than viewing these transfers as mere money moving across borders, the card helps redirect a portion of that money into everyday household spending through a dedicated retail payment product.
The partnership also reflects Carrefour Kenya’s ownership structure. The retailer is operated by Dubai-based Majid Al Futtaim Retail under franchise rather than by Carrefour’s French parent company, making Majid Al Futtaim the business behind the agreement.
