NRS reaffirms commitment to voluntary tax compliance one year after landmark reforms


THE Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has reaffirmed its dedication to fostering voluntary tax compliance, exactly one year after the rollout of Nigeria’s comprehensive tax reform initiatives.

In an earlier statement marking the anniversary, the NRS described taxpayer education as a critical pillar in sustaining the gains recorded since the reforms began. The landmark overhaul, which included simplifying tax procedures, reducing multiple taxation, and enhancing digital platforms, has significantly improved the ease of paying taxes across the country.

“Voluntary compliance remains at the heart of our strategy,” the NRS stated. “One year on, we have seen encouraging improvements in taxpayer registration and filing rates, but sustained public enlightenment is essential to deepen these gains.”

Officials noted that the reforms have streamlined processes, minimised compliance costs, and expanded the tax net without increasing the tax burden on honest payers. Digital tools such as the enhanced e-filing portal and integrated tax administration system have played a major role in reducing human contact and opportunities for corruption.

Despite the progress, the service acknowledged that challenges persist, particularly in reaching informal sector operators and smaller businesses. To address this, the NRS has intensified nationwide sensitisation campaigns, workshops, and media engagements aimed at demystifying tax obligations and highlighting the direct link between tax revenue and national development.
