Esther Okoronkwo became the face of a distressing story this week, not for a goal or an assist, but for a wave of racist abuse aimed at her on Instagram.
A Super Falcons forward and AFC Toronto favourite, she posted footage accusing hotel staff in Casablanca of stealing cash from her and four teammates, just days before Nigeria’s WAFCON 2026 opener against Malawi.
What followed was a torrent of monkey emojis and other dehumanising comments, prompting both the Nigeria Football Federation and her Canadian club to publicly defend her ahead of Tuesday’s kickoff in Rabat.
According to Okoronkwo’s own account, housekeeping staff at the Hotel Marriott in Casablanca took nearly $700 from her room alone, while several teammates also lost smaller sums before the squad relocated to Rabat.
Moroccan authorities moved quickly, arresting a hotel employee who confessed under questioning and received a six-month prison sentence after fingerprint evidence linked him to each affected room. Despite that swift resolution, Okoronkwo’s honesty about the ordeal triggered a fresh wave of hostility online, showing how quickly public sympathy for an athlete can curdle into abuse.
This controversy lands at a crucial moment for Nigerian football. Nigeria travelled to Morocco in pursuit of a record-extending eleventh WAFCON crown after edging the same hosts 3-2 in the 2024 final, a tournament in which Okoronkwo topped the assist charts with six.
Her club form backs up that pedigree too, as she racked up 11 goals and 8 assists for AFC Toronto during the club’s Supporters’ Shield-winning 2025 Northern Super League campaign.
