President Donald Trump has warned that the United States will respond after Iran launched missiles towards a US military base in Jordan, marking another escalation in the growing tensions across the Middle East.

Speaking on Wednesday, Trump said, “We’ll be hitting them hard,” according to Fox News, although he did not indicate when any action might take place. His remarks came five days after he suspended a 13-day US bombing campaign, while Iran had also paused retaliatory strikes targeting American interests in the Gulf.

The missile attack happened on Tuesday as Trump hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched several ballistic missiles from Iran in what it described as an attempted surprise attack on American forces stationed in the region.

CENTCOM stated, “At 5:45 pm ET today, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran in an attempted surprise attack on US forces based in the Middle East. All Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted. US forces remain vigilant and at a high state of readiness.”

Reports indicated that five missile interceptions took place over Jordan. The IRGC also confirmed the strike, saying it targeted a US airbase and a CENTCOM facility in Jordan using several ballistic missiles. The group added, “As long as threats against the Islamic Republic of Iran continue and illegal and vicious actions by American forces against our interests continue, the resistance will continue.”
