Every World Cup produces unforgettable goals, breakout stars and fierce rivalries. This year, however, one of the tournament’s most talked-about moments had little to do with tactics or the scoreline.

Instead, it was the friendship between Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham.

Long before they found themselves on opposite sides in Norway’s World Cup quarter-final against England, the pair were teammates at Borussia Dortmund. Arriving as two of football’s brightest young talents, they quickly developed a bond that extended beyond the pitch. Whether celebrating goals, joking during club media appearances or embracing after Champions League clashes years later, Haaland and Bellingham have consistently shown that elite competition doesn’t have to come at the expense of genuine friendship. 

That friendship became one of the tournament’s most wholesome talking points.

As England and Norway met with a place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals on the line, fans once again spotted the familiar smiles, embraces and light-hearted exchanges between the former teammates before football took centre stage. For 90 minutes, and eventually 120, the friendship was put on hold as both chased the same dream. Afterwards, the mutual respect remained.
