Dangote Refinery Snags Sovereign-Like Pricing in $750 Million Global Eurobond Debut

Dangote Petroleum Refinery successfully tapped international debt markets for the first time, raising $750 million through a debut Eurobond as Africa’s richest man prepares his expansive energy empire for a landmark public listing.

The five-year, dollar-denominated bond due in July 2031 was priced at par to yield 7.50%, according to data compiled by Eurobond.Africa.

The transaction was executed via a Rule 144A private placement aimed at Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs) in the U.S. and other global markets. A heavyweight banking syndicate comprising JPMorgan Chase & Co., Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and Standard Chartered Plc acted as joint bookrunners.

Breaking the Sovereign Ceiling

The most striking aspect of the transaction is its pricing. At 7.50%, the refinery managed to print its debut paper 25 basis points tighter than its sister entity, Dangote Fertiliser, which cleared a similar $750 million note at 7.75% just three months prior.

More crucially, the 7.50% yield places the refinery’s borrowing costs broadly flat to Nigeria’s sovereign Eurobond curve.

In emerging market corporate finance, matching or pricing inside the host nation’s government curve is a rare feat. It signals that international credit markets are effectively “decoupling” Dangote’s export-led, dollar-generating industrial assets from Nigeria’s broader macroeconomic vulnerabilities, local currency volatility, and sovereign risks.

Market confidence has been anchored by significant operational milestones on the ground. The massive facility has rapidly moved past initial scaling hurdles and is currently approaching a refining throughput of 700,000 barrels per day during active test runs.
