HyperBeamforming to improve internet access for high-speed train passengers – Technology Times


Huawei has introduced HyperBeamforming, a new wireless technology designed to provide faster, more reliable mobile internet for passengers travelling on high-speed trains by reducing signal drops and strengthening network coverage along railway routes.

The solution, according to the Chinese technology company, addresses one of the biggest connectivity challenges on high-speed railways: maintaining stable mobile and internet services as trains move rapidly between cellular base stations.

HyperBeamforming uses advanced antenna technology and intelligent signal processing to direct wireless signals more accurately towards moving trains, enabling passengers to enjoy more consistent voice calls, video streaming, web browsing and other data-intensive services during their journeys, according to Huawei.

High-speed trains place significant demands on mobile networks because users move quickly through changing coverage areas, often resulting in interrupted calls and fluctuating internet speeds. Huawei said its new technology minimises these disruptions by improving how mobile signals are transmitted and received along railway corridors.

At the heart of the solution is a combination of intelligent beamforming and an 8-transmit, 8-receive (8T8R) antenna architecture. Beamforming enables mobile networks to focus radio signals directly towards trains instead of broadcasting them uniformly in all directions, strengthening coverage, increasing network capacity and improving spectrum efficiency.

Beyond enhancing passenger connectivity, Huawei said HyperBeamforming also supports digital railway operations by providing more dependable wireless communications for train control systems, operational monitoring and other mission-critical railway services.
